Thought Matters PUBLIC SEMINAR
A Pedagogy of Hope
7.30pm, Thursday 24 September 2015
Booth College of Mission Chapel
Thought Matters continues with a critical look at Paulo Freire’s ‘Pedagogy of Hope.’ A Brazilian educator and philosopher, the central proposition of Freire is that education should not only give hope to the poor but embody a preferential treatment of the poor. Emma Daly will discuss the importance of how, for Freire, hope comes from a place of rage and love, and that while it “attempts to explain and defend progressive post-modernity,…it… reject[s] conservative, neoliberal post-modernity” (Freire, 2014 p10). Exploring the intersection between Freire and liberation theology, Emma will look at how this ‘pedagogy of hope’ challenges what the western church has made of hope.
Emma Daly lectures at Te Rito Maioha Early Childhood New Zealand and is Junior Soldier Sergeant at Wellington City Corps.
